Character Analysis
Dogberry
Dogberry begins by being an object of ridicule and ends up the same way ("You are an ass!"). His men discover the deception by Don John — through their noting — but the deception is finally brought to full exposure in spite of Dogberry's efforts rather than because of them. But his role as comic relief is beautifully designed, leaving the audience wondering whether he is truly as confused and simple-minded as he seems. He is left unchanged by the actions of the play, except for his hurt pride.
