I hate finding typos in books. Here's one I've seen several times: jalousies instead of jealousies.
Although jalousies and jealousies even sound almost the same (jal and jel), they are two different words. A jalousie is a window covering with horizontal slats. Picture window blinds. Jealousy, of course, refers to being resentfully wishful for what someone else has, whether money, fame, friends, or fit body.
In his book Victory, Joseph Conrad writes
Mrs. Schomberg in a dim up-stair room with closed jalousies, was elaborating those two long pendant ringlets which were such a feature of her hairdressing for her afternoon duties.
From William Faulkner's short story, A Rose for Emily,
Later we said, 'Poor Emily' behind the jalousies as they passed on Sunday afternoon in the glittering buggy, Miss Emily with her head high and Homer Barron with his hat cocked and a cigar in his teeth, reins and whip in a yellow glove.
