What's shrive? My neighbor said she's been unshriven for years, but I think her skin looks quite shriveled.
Shrivel means to shrink and become wrinkled or withered. Shrive means to make one's confession or to hear confessions. Technically, the two words are unrelated; however, some people might think that being unshriven (not shriven) could lead to having a shriveled soul.
In Act I, Scene 2 of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, Portia talks about one of the many suitors whom she is forced to consider for her husband:
. . . if he have the condition of a saint and the complexion
of a devil, I had rather he should shrive me than wive me.
