What's comfit? Is it a different way of saying comfort?
Some people eat comfits when they seek comfort, so the two words could be related in that way. Comfits are candy or sweets (such as candied nuts or fruits). Don't confuse comfit with confit, which is meat that's been cooked and preserved in its own fat and isn't as good for dessert.
In Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Alice distributes prizes to the winners of a strange competition, the Caucus-race:
[Everybody] at once crowded around her, calling out in a confused way, "Prizes! Prizes!"
Alice had no idea what to do, and in despair she put her hand in her pocket, and pulled out a box of comfits . . . and handed them round as prizes. There was exactly one a-piece all round.
